Anti-retroviral treatment & sports doping

Apr 1, 2012
Hi,if a person who was taking anti retroviral drugs were subject to a sports doping test (but is not taking any form of performance enhancing drugs)would this show up in any way in their test?
Response from Mr. Vergel
Efavirenz (Sustiva) (also in Atripla) may cause false positive test for marijuana if gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (or "GC/MS") is not employed. That is the only HIV medication that may have that problem.
If they are using other methods for drug testing and you come up positive for marijuana (assuming you are on Efavirenz), ask them to run a confirmatory test using GC/MS.
